A Website That Bridges Science and Storytelling

When Alex Warneke, a marine scientist and creative communicator, reached out, she was ready for her online presence to match the impact of her work.

Alex had already built her own Squarespace website but found it difficult to capture her vision while managing her growing projects and collaborations. She wanted a space that could house her writing, scientific initiatives, and art in a cohesive, visually engaging way.

Throughout her career, Alex has worked to make science more accessible, often collaborating with artists, scientists, and changemakers to inspire action and connection. She needed a website that reflected that same creative energy but still modern and rooted in storytelling.

Thanks so much — it all looks better than I could have imagined!” she told us after seeing her final design.

What We Created Together

We began with our (now retired) Sand & Sun Squarespace Template as the foundation and completely transformed it to fit Alex’s creative brand. The goal: a design that felt dynamic and intellectual to showcase the reflection of where science meets art.

Our approach focused on:

  • A custom brand identity: including typography and color palettes that balanced clarity with creativity.

  • Dynamic geometric elements: subtle transparent triangles added visual movement and texture, giving the site a layered, modern feel.

  • A restructured portfolio: designed to organize both science and art projects in a clear, intuitive way.

  • Professional copy flow: emphasizing her collaborative mission and inviting visitors to explore her work deeply.

Alex’s new brand photos tied everything together, helping the site feel cohesive, approachable, and distinctly hers.

A Collaborative and Thoughtful Process

Alex was the kind of client every designer loves to collaborate with! She was organized, communicative, and clear about her goals. She came prepared with vision boards and inspiration, which made the creative process seamless.

She wanted her site to do more than look good. She communicated to us clearly that it needed to function as a professional hub where visitors could explore her ideas, read her publications, and view her art. Every design decision was made with that balance of intellect and creativity in mind.

When she launched her new site, her peers noticed immediately, and she quickly got hundreds of comments on LinkedIn poured in from colleagues complimenting the site’s design and clarity.

The Outcome

The final result is a customized Squarespace website that looks nothing like the original template. It’s clean, layered, and completely reflective of Alex’s personality and professional story.

It serves as both a portfolio and a platform — a digital home where her scientific expertise and creative perspective coexist beautifully.

Her website now captures what makes her work special: curiosity, collaboration, and a love for connecting people with the wonder of science.
